Janus Hochgesand has been represented by [dst.galerie] since 2009. The artist refers to his abstract paintings as „High Intensity Paintings“ where surface, structures, and textures take center stage. The former sculptor, who studied under Tobias Rehberger at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, considers color as a material in a tactile sense. In his studio, which serves as a laboratory for painting, one won’t find brushes or easels. Instead, Hochgesand applies pigment and oil to the canvas through direct and dynamic movements, often using his footwear as artistic tools.
Born in 1981 in Dierdorf, Janus Hochgesand studied from 2002 to 2004 at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under Prof. Andreas Slominski, in 2005 at the Esmeralda Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado in Mexico City under Prof. Sofia Taboas, and from 2005 to 2009 at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, where he was awarded the Academy’s graduate prize as a master student of Tobias Rehberger. This award was followed by further prizes, scholarships, and active participation in the exhibition scene, culminating in 2021 with his solo exhibition „Muy Mucho,“ curated by Sebastian Baden, at the Ludwig Museum Koblenz.
